ASSISTANT SURVEYOR.
The Vestry have at various times provided temporary assistance
in this department; but as the amount of work continued to increase,
your Surveyor, early in September, submitted to the Works and
Sewers Committee a report advising that a permanent professional
assistant should be appointed; this, after due consideration, was
decided upon, and in November the Vestry appointed Mr. Robt. T.
Miller to the post.

should report on the advisability of making alteration in the working
of the scavenging and dusting gangs. This report was submitted in
October, the chief recommendations were, that the scavenging gang
should commence work at 3 a.m., instead of 6 a.m., so that the greater
part-of the main roads should be dealt with before the commencement
of the ordinary day's traffic; that the main streets should be dealt
with daily, and the other streets twice, or three times, a week, according

the opening of the shoot at an earlier hour by the wharf owner than

to Mr. Murrell the sum of £1 per week during the winter months.
The collection of dust was also overhauled, and it was anticipated that
a bi-weekly collection of dust might be obtained in the greater part of
