SEWERAGE.
A commencement was made on the 5th of September to take out
the old sewers in the Friar Street Area, and to lay new sewers in
accordance with the scheme prepared by my predecessor, and up to
date the following streets have been dealt with:—Friar Street,
Lancaster Street, King James Street, Silex Street, Belvedere Buildings,
Bean Street, and Minor Place; and those in Gun Street and
Miniver Street are in progress.
Earlier in the year, the old sewers were taken out and new sewers
constructed in Little Suffolk Street, Sterry Street, and a portion in
Borough Road.
In carrying out this work, it was found that the original sewers
had been laid with little regard to either line or level, and that
jointing material had in many cases been forgotten or of such poor
substance that it had disappeared.
At the beginning of March, the sewer in Falstaff Yard was found
to be in a very defective condition, and at the order of the Vestry this
sewer was relaid.
A number of combined drains have been relaid in various parts
of the parish.
The number of street gullies in the various streets is very low,
and there is often a difficulty, in draining the water from the surface
of the road. If these were increased, considerable saving in the
weight of slop taken to the shoot would result, besides keeping the
streets in a better condition.
As a result of constant reports to the Sanitary Committee, of
various sewers being unventilated, &c., the Committee have instructed
your Surveyor to have a survey of the sewers in the parish, with a
view to getting a correct plan of the existing sewers, and that the
Surveyor prepare a report upon their condition, &c. This work is
now in progress, and I hope in a short time to be in a position to
submit a report on one portion of the parish.
During the year, the following drainage plans have been reported
upon and submitted to the Public Health and Sewers Committee,
and dealt with as indicated.
