Mr. Thomas Haynes was re-appointed Chairman of the Vestry
for the year.
On the 18th October, 1898, the Yestry passed a vote of condolence
with the widow of the late Mr. J. Calver, who was for many
years a Member of the Vestry.
COMPOUNDING FOR RATES.
In consequence of the Vestry having adopted a new scale for
Compounding Bates, it became necessary to pass a resolution
rescinding an Order of the Vestry of the 14th September, 1869,
applying Section 4 of the Poor Bate Collection and Assessment Act,
1869, to this parish. The rescinding resolution was adopted at the
meeting of the Vestry on the 5th April, 1898, and came into effect
six months after that date.
UNDERGROUND CONVENIENCES.
Some little delay occurred at the commencement of the year in
obtaining the sanction of the Local Government Board for the loan
of £3,900, required to carry out the work of constructing the Underground
Conveniences in Old Kent Boad and St. George's Circus and
the Underground Urinal at the Newington Causeway end of the
Borough Boad. The sanction was, however, received on the 5th
April, and the Vestry's seal was ordered to be affixed to the mortgage
to the Council on the 3rd May.
At the meeting of the Vestry on the 7th June, it was determined
to invite tenders for the construction of the Conveniences in St.
George's Circus and Borough Boad, and, at the same meeting, the
seal of the Vestry was affixed to Messrs. .Pinch's contract for the Old
Kent Boad Convenience.
That firm also obtained the contract for constructing the
Convenience at St. George's Circus at the price of £1,659, and the
Urinal at the Newington Causeway end of the Borough Boad for £879.
No provision was made in the Convenience at St. George's
Circus for Females; but on the 28th June the Yestry passed a
resolution to the effect that a Women's Convenience be erected at
the rear of the Library Buildings, in accordance with the plan then
subminitted. An agreement was entered into with the Library
ommissioners for the use of the site at the rental of £5 per annum,
