The Vestry in the month of May, 1880, Memorialized the Metropolitan Board
of Works to secure the site of Horsemonger Lane Gaol, as an open space for public
recreation, to which a reply was received, stating that the Memorial had received the
careful consideration of the Board, and that communication was at once opened with
the Justices of the Peace for the County of Surrey, for the purpose of ascertaining
whether, in view of the object for which there was a public desire to see the site appropriated,
they would consent to sell it for such a sum as the Board might properly give.
The Justices having failed to sell the ground by auction, intimated their willingness to
sell it to the Board for the purpose of its being kept as an open space for the sum of
£18,000. That the Board after visiting the site, came to the conclusion that this sum
was more than it would be justified in giving for so small a piece of ground, the Board
had therefore been under the necessity of declining the offer.
