nuisance. The latter is occasioned by the gases arising from the entra???
of the animals, while undergoing the necessary processes for being co???
verted into cat-gut. I have recommended the maker to keep the low???
part of the factory closed as far as possible, to place in the factory
vessel gradually giving off small quantities of chlorine, and to erect ???
the top of the building a long funnel with a ventilator.
On the same day the summons against the fish-boilers near the Plou???
Bridge was also partly heard, and adjourned for the same purpose as ???
preceding one. On Thursday, however, 24th October, the fish-boili???
was going on as usual, and the stench was so offensive that a cro???
collected, and one of the proprietors, according to his own statemen???
was threatened by the assembled multitude with personal violence, a???
broad hints were thrown out that if the nuisance was not speedily su???
pressed, a summary process would be employed for that purp???
Another summons was, therefore, taken out and heard on Wednefsda???
30th October, when it was finally settled that all work in the factor???
should be stopped, until apparatus had been erected to satisfy th???
Medical Officer that the business could be carried on without anno???
ance to the inhabitants.
Two sources of nuisance exist at this factory, one is from the steami???
of the fish, the other from the leakage of the tank in which the liquid fror???
the steamed fish is accumulated, and of which the sickening effluv???
could bo plainly smelt at one hundred feet from the building. I recom???
mend:—1st, that the tank, which is of wood, be lined with metal an???
made air and water-tight, and properly covered; 2ud, that the fish???
steamed in a closed boiler with a pipe annexed, to convey the wah???
steam into a high shaft.
Several Vestrymen who happened on Thursday, 24th October, to b???
in the neighbourhood of the factory, had nasal demonstration of th???
intensity of the nuisance from the operation of fish cooking.
Thirty-nine deaths were registered in Rotherhithe last month, c???
which seven were from drowning and thirty-two from disease. No le???
than ten persons, or nearly one-third of the whole, died from pulmonar???
consumption, two from fever, one from diarrhoea, and one from hoopin???
cough; measles, scarlatina, and small-pox are at present absent.
Yours respectfully,
November, 1861. W. MURDOCH.
