The house, No. 42, Trinity Street, projects out about two feet ???
than No. 43. A right angle is thus formed by the two walla
tenants of the first house complain that this angle is made use of
urinal by the public, and that they are, in consequence, subject???
considerable annoyance and inconvenience. I submit this complan???
the Vestry, with the remark that the owners of the houses Nor ???
43 might easily come to an understanding, and remedy the evil???
small expense.
Early in the month of July, information was received at the ???
that a large quantity of fish had been sent to the Union Chef???
Works, Union Road, for the purpose of making artificial manure???
that there was much dissatisfaction in that neighbourhood on ac???
of the filthy effluvia emitted from the Works. The Inspector???
Medical Officer at once proceeded thither, and found that the n
ments were not exaggerated. There were on the premises several ???
tubs full of putrid fish, some of which were black as if they had???
chnrred by tire or strong sulphuric acid. A notice was immedia???
served, and two days after all the fish had been removed from the pl???
On the 16th July a horrible stench of fish again arose, and 1 ???
visited the Union Works, but did not find any fish on the premises,
foreman attributing the smell to the fact of the ovens being impregn???
with the stink from the former bakings, a statement which I have i???n
difficulty in believing. A few days after I called on Mr. Barbe???
Jamaica Level, Bermondsey, the owner of the Union Works.
solemnly declared that he is a practical chemist, and not a man???
maker, that the foreman had taken in the fish upon his own respo???
bility, and without the master's sanction or knowledge. He then ???
for the foreman, and reprimanded him severely in my presence for???
post conduct, and gave instructions as to the uncharging of the pot???
the manufacture of hydrochloric acid, which instructions, if prop???
carried out, will much abate the nuisance at the Union Works.
Barber invited the frequent visits of the officers of this Vestry to
Works. I hope that a better state of things will henceforth exist.
Forty deaths were registered in July. Although diarrhoea be???
valent, the parish is more healthy than it generally is at this time???
the year.
Yours respectfully,
August, 1861. W. MURDOCH!
