Borough of Paddington.
My estimate of the cost, submitted at the same
time, was £5,428 12s. 3d.; the Council requested
some slight additions to the abutments, this, with the
advance in Materials, increased the estimated cost to
£5,526 5s. 9d. They agreed to contribute half of
of this amount, viz.:—£2,763, towards the construction
of the bridge.
The work was advertised for, and the following
tenders were received: —

The tender of Messrs. Neave & Son being the
lowest was accepted in March, 1899, and the work
commenced in the middle of, June, the time allowed
lor completion being nine months; but, owing to the
South African war, and the immense pressure that
has been put upon manufacturing engineers, considerable
delay has been experienced in obtaining the steel
work, and it was only in the early months of this
year that the girders were delivered. It is fully
expected that the entire work will be completed in
May next.
