Of the 597 deaths, 105 were of infants under 1
year of age, 184 of children under 5 years, and 163
of persons aged 65 years and upwards.
The rate of infantile mortality in Paddington was
150 deaths to 1,000 registered births, as compared
with 120 in the corresponding quarter of last year.
In London it was 173, as compared with 140 last
year. In the thirty-three largest provincial towns it
ranged from 127 in Portsmouth to 229 in Blackburn.
In sixty-seven other large town districts the infantile
mortality averaged 161 per 1,000 births, ranging from
75 in Hastings to 269 in Darwen.
The deaths of children under 5 years of age constituted
30.8 per cent. of the total deaths. 56 of these
