Of the 471 deaths, 107 were of infants under 1
year of age, 163 of children under 5 years, and 90 of
persons aged 65 years and upwards.
The rate of infantile mortality in Paddington was
142 deaths to 1,000 registered births. In London it
was 148. In the 33 largest provincial towns it ranged
from 103 in Croydon to 248 in Preston. In 67 other
large town districts the infant mortality averaged 144
per 1,000 births, ranging from 79 in Reading to 212
in St. Helen's.
The deaths of children under 5 years of age constituted
34.6 per cent. of the total deaths. 43 of
these deaths were due to one or other of the seven
principal zymotic diseases, of which 32 occurred in
St. Mary's, and 11 in St. John's Sub-district.
