Of the 578 deaths, 85 were of infants under 1 year
of age, 130 of children under 5 years, and 176 of
persons aged 65 years and upwards.
The rate of infantile mortality in Paddington was
105 deaths to 1,000 registered births. In London it
was 131. In the thirty-three largest provincial towns
it ranged from 124 in Huddersfield to 203 in Burnley.
In sixty-seven other large town districts the infant
mortality averaged 142 per 1,000 births, ranging from
79 in Scarborough to 221 in Merthyr Tydvil.
The deaths of children under 5 years of age constituted
22.5 per cent. of the total deaths. 20 of these
deaths were due to one or other of the seven principal
zymotic diseases, of which 19 occurred in St. Mary's
and 1 in St. John's Sub-district.
