Sanding Frosty Roads.
The length of time the frost lasted, and the
continuous falls of snow, necessitated the men, horses,
and sanding machines being sent out during the day,
late at night, and early in the morning, scattering
sand, shingle, and ashes over the surface of the roads.
In fact, both men and horses were quite knocked up
with the strain put upon them. 603 horses and carts
were out on 46 occasions, the total number of hours
being 2,627; 1,292 cubic yards of shingle and 814
chaldrons of ashes were used.
