rail and the kerb, with wood blocks, on a 6-inch bed of
concrete. This work occupied a much longer time
executing, as provision had to be made for keeping
the traffic of the roadway and tram-lines open during
the progress of the works, which was accomplished
without any stoppages or accidents.
The Wood Paving in Edgware Road, from Praed
Street to Church Street, having been down for eight
years, and being worn out, was renewed in October
last with new wood blocks, at an expenditure of
£2,271 6s. 1ld. This paving was laid without a
cement grouted joint, the blocks being laid and driven
up to a butt joint, hot tar and pitch being poured
over the surface and in the joints. This system of
laying wood paving is largely adopted in the Parish of
Marylebone.
