least organic matter, whilst of the river waters, that
supplied by the New River Company was the best in
this respect. The water sent out by the West Middlesex
Company was conspicuous both by a higher maximum
and a greater average of organic impurity.
In Table C are recorded the results of observations
respecting the freedom from turbidity, or otherwise,
of the various waters, and for purposes of comparison,
the results of similar observations made in 1868 are
also included.
From this Table it will be seen that every sample
of river water was clear and bright when drawn from
the mains. The contrast between the appearance of
these river supplies in 1868, and that in 1888, is very
striking, and affords the strongest evidence of the
improvements which have been made in the methods
of purification by the Companies.
I have the honour to be,
Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
JAMES STEVENSON,
Medical Officer of Health.
Vestry Hall, Paddington,
June, 1889.
