The death-rate in London—196 per 1,000 inhabitants—was,
the Registrar-General remarks, "the
lowest rate recorded since the present system of civil
registration began, and, moreover, the two next lowest
were those recorded in the two immediately preceding
years, 1885 and 1886, when the figures were respectively
19.8 and 19.9."
