REPORT, 1887-8.
issued for re-adjusting old landmarks, and erecting
new ones where required.
XXX. Open Spaces.
The Vestry decided to improve the Churchyard
attached to St. Mary's Church. Application was
made for the necessary faculty, and in due course
the Churchyard will be laid out as a public
garden.
An effort was made by the Vestry to add a Recreation
Ground to the Parish, in celebration of the
Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Victoria's reign, and
for this purpose a Special Committee was appointed
to co-operate with a Committee of Ratepayers, for
acquiring about 30 acres of land, north of Elgin
Avenue. Owing to insuperable difficulties with
the Paddington Trustees and the Ecclesiastical
Commissioners, the joint owners of the land,
the scheme had ultimately to be abandoned. Subsequently,
however, a number of ratepayers
secured a portion of the land referred to for a term
of 3 years, for the purposes named, and doubtless
efforts will be made to secure the land as a permanent
Recreation Ground for the Parish. During
the winter a large number of "Unemployed" were
engaged in levelling, draining, and laying out the
ground. The report of the Committee which carried
out this work will be found in the Minutes of the
Vestry.
