REPORT, 1887-8.
GENERAL.
Carting Roadway Materials.—On this description
of work 2,519 horses and carts have been engaged 306
days, giving an average of 8.23 per day.
Horses.—The losses by deaths and sales during
the year have been as follows:—
No. 8.—A chestnut mare, purchased in April, 1879; working
eight years and three months; being past work, was
slaughtered July 21st, 1887.
No. 22.—A chestnut gelding, purchased in March, 1881;
working six years and six months ; had a pricked foot,
injuring the coffin-joint; was slaughtered October 6th,
1887.
No. 50.—A black gelding, purchased in March, 1885;
working only two years and nine months, injuring its
foot and heel; was slaughtered December 28th, 1887.
At the close of the watering season, five old horses not
worth wintering were weeded out and sold by public auction at
Mr. RymiU's Repository, Barbican, realizing an average of
£4 14s. 5d. The present stock being 60, and these are in a good
working condition.
