METEOROLOGY.
Mr. James Glaisher, F.R.S., in his report to the RegistrarGeneral,
remarks, that in October the weather was generally
fine but very cold ; the temperature of the air being below its
average on nearly every day of the month ; and the month as
a whole being colder than any October since the year 1817.
The mean temperature of the air was 45°, being 4°.6 below
the average of 116 years. The fall of rain was less than the
average through the month, and the wind was chiefly from the
north-west.
The month of November was dry and cold. The mean
temperature of the air was 40°.8, being 1°.6 below the average
of 116 years. The rainfall was above the average. The
prevailing wind was the north east.
The month of December was fine and cold. The mean
temperature of the air was 38°. 1, being 1° below the average
of 116 years. The rain was generally less than the average.
The wind was mostly from the north-west.
The mean temperature in London for the quarter was 41°.2,
being 2°.4 less than the average of 116 years.
The rainfall in London during the quarter was 6.25 inches.
