inhabitants. In the 27 largest provincial towns it ranged from
1.09 in Brighton to 4.92 in Sheffield. In England and Wales the
deaths corresponded to an annual rate of 1.99 per 1,000 living,
against an average annual rate of 2.44 in the ten preceding fourth
quarters.
Small Pox caused no death in Paddington.
Measles caused 8 deaths in Paddington—equivalent to an
annual rate of 0.28 per .1,000 inhabitants—of whieh 7 occurred
in St. Mary's and 1 in St. John's Sub-districts. In London the
rate was 0.31.
Scarlet Fever caused 12 deaths—equivalent to an annual
rate of 0.42 per 1,000 inhabitants—of which 10 occurred in
St. Mary's and 2 in St. John's Sub-districts. 120 cases were
removed to the Asylum Hospitals and 4 to the London Fever
Hospital. Of these 124 cases, 114 were from St. Mary's Subdistrict
and 10 from St. John's.
In London the rate was 0.63.
I defer making any remarks respecting the epidemic of
Scarlet Fever, which has extensively prevailed in Paddington
and in other parts of the Metropolis and of the country, until
it has ceased.
Diphtheria caused 7 deaths—5 in St. Mary's and 2 in
St. John's Sub-district—equivalent to an annual rate of 0'24
per 1,000 inhabitants. The houses in which the deaths
occurred were carefully inspected. In one of these the only
defects observed were the objectionable bell-traps too generally
used ; in another there were defective brick connections and
untrapped inlets; in a third the drainage was very defective
throughout; and in the remaining four houses no defects were
apparent.
