REPORT, 1887-8.
The old 15-ton steam road roller having been in
constant use for upwards of 16 years, and requiring a
thorough overhaul (which would cost at least £188,
and this would not include a new boiler), the Works
Committee considered it far more economical to recommend
the Vestry to dispose of the old heavy roller and
purchase a new 10-ton roller, which is quite heavy
enough for the purpose required, as the 15-ton roller
in many instances pulverizes the sharp edges of the
broken granite. The lighter roller also possesses the
advantages of the modern improvements, and it can be
driven and steered by one man instead of two, by this
means alone a saving in working is effected of £62 per
annum.
