METEOROLOGY.
Mr. James Glaisher, F.R.S., in his report to the RegistrarGeneral
on the Meteorology of England, remarks that in October
the weather was warmer than in any October back to 1861.
The fall of rain was above the average at most stations.
The mean temperature of the air for October was 53°.3,
being 30.8 above the average of 115 years.
In November the weather was unsettled, the temperature
being variable, the mean being 44°. The latter part of the
month was cloudy, foggy, and dull.
December was characterised by, for the most part, dull and
cold weather. The mean temperature was 36°.5. The atmospheric
pressure was very remarkable, the barometer showing
some extraordinary low readings, the lowest being 28°.14
on the 9th December.
The mean temperature of the quarter was 44°.6, being
higher than the average of 115 years.
The rain-fall in London during the quarter was 8.38 inches.
