to 5.44 in Huddersfield. In England and Wales the deaths
corresponded to an annual rate of 1.77 per 1,000, against an
average annual rate of 2.27 for the 10 preceding first quarters.
Small Pox caused no death in Paddington, 1 case was
removed from St. Mary's Sub-district to one of the Hospitals of
the Asylums Board.
Measles caused 15 deaths, equivalent to annual rate of 0.52
per 1,000 inhabitants. All occurred in St. Mary's Sub-district.
In London the rate was 0.82.
Scarlet Fever caused 11 deaths, all of which occurred in
St. Mary's Sub-district. 32 cases were sent to the Hospitals
of the Asylums Board. All with one exception were removed
from St. Mary's Sub-district.
Diphtheria caused 10 deaths—6 in St. Mary's and 4 in
St. John's Sub-district—equivalent to an annual rate of 0'35 per
1,000 inhabitants. In London the rate was 0.19.
All the houses in which the deaths occurred were carefully
inspected. Three were in a fair sanitary condition, in three
bell traps were the only observable defects, in one the drainage
was at fault, in another the water supply to W.C. was defective.
In two cases the disease was not contracted in the parish.
Typhoid Fever caused 1 death in St. John's Sub-district
(1), Hyde Park Square, Son of a Merchant, aged 21 years,
disease believed not to have been contracted in Paddington.
