Ninety-nine new pipe drains of different capacities
have been constructed at applicants' cost, from the
sewers to various buildings, where the old drains were
found in a defective condition, or where drains in new
positions were required.
These works, together with the construction and
reconstruction of catchpits and gulley drains in streets,
fixing flap traps at outlets of drains and various
repairs to sewers have been executed at a cost of
£1,817 15s. 1d.
The Vestry has received in various contributions
from builders and others £742 1s. 1d. for drainage
works carried out for them, and such sum is included
in the before-mentioned amount of £1,817 15s. 1d.
One hundred and sixty-four complaints have been
received in this department from householders,
builders, and others during the year. These complaints
were varied in character, comprising obstructions
in drains which could not be removed by the
complainants themselves, foul smells arising from untrapped
outlets of house and gulley drains or from
sewer ventilators in streets. In every case where
practicable, the cause of complaint has been removed
as early as possible.
Ninety-nine examinations from large brick sewers
have been made for private persons by the Vestry's
workmen, at a charge of only four shillings for each
