The mean temperature of the air was 36°.l, being 0°.4 below
the average for 114 years.
The weather in February was very cold and dull, with
scarcely any sunshine. Snow fell very frequently. There was
an excess of North and East wind. The mean temperature of
the air was 33°.7, being 5°.0 below the average of 115 years.
Back to 1772 there have been but 7 instances of so cold a
February, viz.:—
In 1784, when it was 31°.9
„ 1785, „ „ 30°.4
,, 1827, „ „ 31°.6
„ 1838, „ „ 32°.9
„ 1845, „ „ 32°.7
„ 1853, „ „ 33°.3
,, 1855, „ „ 29°.4
In March the weather was very cold till the 18th day, being
nearly 10° below the average. Then there was a sudden change
to warm weather the remaining twelve days, 6¼° above the
average. Snow fell heavily in the early part of the month.
Till the 18th there was an excess of East winds. The mean
temperature of the air in March was 39°.6, being 1°.5 below the
average of 115 years.
The mean temperature of the quarter was 36°.5, being 2°.3
below the average of 115 years. The rain-fall in London during
the quarter was 5 inches.
