The number of deaths from the seven principal preventable
diseases was 34, the same as in the corresponding quarter
of last year, and was equivalent to an annual rate of 1.2 per
1,000 inhabitants. In London the death-rate was equivalent
to an annual rate of 2.12 per 1,000 inhabitants. In the 27
largest provincial towns it ranged from 0.55 in Huddersfield
to 3.41 in Liverpool. In England and Wales the deaths
corresponded to an annual rate of 1.89 per 1,000, against an
average rate of 2.64 for the ten preceding fourth quarters.
Smallpox caused the deaths of 2 parishioners, 1 of which
occurred in Paddington, and the other on board the Hospital
Ship "Atlas." 3 cases from St. Mary's, and 2 from St.
