In 1883 the death-rate was in London 20.4 per 1,000.
„ „ in Edinburgh 19.2 „
„ „ in Glasgow 28.2 „
„ „ in Dublin 29.2 „
„ „ in England and Wales 19.5 „
The annual rate of mortality in each one of the
five groups of districts into which London is divided
is shown as under:—
North Districts 19.1 per 1,000.
South „ 19.4 „
West „ 19.5 „
Central „ 23.2 „
East „ 24.1 „
It is satisfactory to find that, with an estimated
increase of population of 1,173, the deaths in 1883
were slightly fewer than in the preceding year. In
London the death-rate (20.4) was the lowest on
record, a fact attributable in part to the low birthrate,
and in a still greater degree to the comparatively
equable temperature throughout the year. As a
consequence the mortality from diseases of the
respiratory organs, and from disorders of the bowels,
was far below the average.
In calculating the death-rate in the Parish no
account is taken of the deaths unknown to me of
parishioners in the hospitals of the Metropolitan
Asylums Board, and in other hospitals or places outside
the Parish.
