executed in connection with wood-paving operations,
&c., 3,042 horses and carts were employed
310 days, giving an average of 9.81 per day.
Horses.—During the year the following losses
have occurred, viz.:—
No. 32. A grey gelding, from diseased lungs, and
worn-out; purchased in 1878—slaughtered.
No. 63. A grey gelding, from quittor, which
affected with paralysis the hind-quarters;
purchased in 1876—slaughtered.
No. 3. A bay gelding, from cankered foot; purchased
in 1878—slaughtered.
A brown mare cob, purchased in 1883, inflammation
of the bowels and paralysis of hindquarters—died.
The present number, 58, are in good working
condition. Towards the close of the watering
season, in October, six old horses, not worth wintering,
were weeded out and sold at St. Martin's Lane,
realising an average of £9 15s. Od.
Fodder.—The following tenders for the supply of
fodder were accepted during the year, the average
cost per horse for keep and bedding being 18s. 5.90d.
per week.
