The before-mentioned quantities were recorded
by 51 water meters, one being attached to each
stand post.
Carting Roadway Materials.— On this class of
work, including cartage work for wood paving
operations, 3,488 horses and carts have been engaged
302 days, giving an average of 11.54 per day.
Horses.— During the year two have died, viz.:—
In January, 1882, a grey gelding, of hydrothorax,
the result of a severe attack of pleurisy.
In October, 1882, a brown gelding, from ruptured
liver.
The present number of horses is 59 ; they are in
good health and condition. In the autumn
the usual practice of weeding out old and
useless horses was carried out; seven were
thus sold at Barbican, realising a net average
of <£13 3s. 2d. During the seven years
ending Lady-day, 1883, the percentage of
loss by deaths has been 13.04, or a yearly
average of 1.85 per cent.; by sales 35.65, or
a yearly average of 5.09 per cent. The actual
money loss by sales and deaths in the seven
years has been 24.96 per cent., or a yearly
average of only 3.56 per cent. I wish to
