Meteorology.
Mr. James Glaisher, F.R.S., in his report to the RegistrarGeneral,
remarks that with the exception of the first three
days the month of July was cold, wet, and ungenial, the
temperature being much below that of 1881. During the
first half of the month of August the weather was moderately
fine, whilst in the latter half it was cold and showery,
although the rain was generally less than the average.
During the first week the weather in the month of September
was fine, but was afterwards cold and unsettled, and the air
more humid than usual. The atmospheric pressure was
throughout the quarter, with the exception of a few days,
constantly below the average. The mean temperature of the
air during the quarter was 58.1°, being 1.6° below the
average for the corresponding period in 111 years, and showed
