Meteorology.—Mr. James Glaisher, F.R.S., in his report
to the Registrar.General, remarks that January was a mild,
pleasant month, being very warm during the first fortnight
and the last five days, and that at the end of the month agricultural
operations were a month in advance ; that February
was mild and pleasant; that in March during the first 20
days, the weather was exceptionally warm and genial; and
that at the end of the quarter vegetation was in a very forward
state. During the 111 years, 1771.1881, the mean temperature
of the months of January, February, and March, has
rarely been so high as the mean recorded in the first quarter
of this year. In London, the rainfall during the quarter was
3.88 inches.
