According to the Census of 1871, the 680 houses in these
two districts contained a population of 6542 persons of all ages.
It appears upon inspection now made that 618 families, or nearly
half the population of this class of street live in single rooms
as their dwelling. Sanitary works, and the accustomed visits
of the Inspector have kept these houses in decent condition,
and over-crowded rooms have been greatly diminished of late
years. The houses of the Moscow Road group are getting old,
and rather dilapidated, but they have one advantage over more
modern built houses for the working class population, that they
have small yards or gardens, either in front or behind, or both,
and there is more open space. In the Moscow group 325 houses
have only a population of 2507 inhabitants, or 7.7 to each house,
while in the Hampden Street district 355 houses have 4035
people in them, or 11.3 to each house; neither have the latter
space worth calling a yard or garden, back or front.
