as Malarious; of the others only 7 are true Typhoid cases. To
find 57, or only 11 per cent. of the deaths in one quarter from
the Zymotic class of disease in a population of above 100
thousand is a most favorable state of civic salubrity, and, I am
afraid will not long continue; indeed the Measle epidemic begins
to show itself here. It has been travelling Westward for some
weeks.
The deaths of young children (under 5 years) arc shamefully
high. It amounts to 32.5 per cent. of the whole, or one-third, but
that is about the same in all large towns. Ignorance of mothers
in child-feeding and child-rearing prevails to a very great
extent. There were 30 deaths in the workhouse infirmary;
43 in St. Mary's Hospital, some of these latter were brought
from outside parishes. Amongst the deaths from violence, and
some not certified, 32 Inquests were held. 27 Bodies were
received into the Mortuary during the quarter, and the fever
carriage was employed for removals 6 times.
Amongst the violent deaths, 3 children died from the effects
of burns from clothes taking fire; 5 were accidentally suffocated
in bed beside the father or mother. 2 newly-born children
were murdered by some person or persons at present unknown;
one man committed suicide; 8 accidents were fatal from street
or railway traffic; and a poor fellow was torn to pieces by a bear
at the Welsh Harp.
