The Kensal Road District, consists (with the exception of
a few wretched old cottages, coming down for new buildings) of
125 houses in 7 streets, all newly built, as usual for one family,
but let out in tenements or holdings of 2 or more families, an
average of 11.3 persons in each house, and without those special
conveniences necessary for a separate dwelling. There is
however a less proportion of families occupying single rooms
than in many other neighbouring streets. The Woodfield Road
District for instance, with almost the same number of houses,
has 400 more persons, averaging 13 in each house, and a larger
proportion of families occupying single rooms only, but there is
ample space on all sides. The canal once divided these two
districts, but the opening of the Carlton Bridge now opens up
in this suburb a thoroughfare to the east and west, which has
long been needed.
