The deaths are below the average of most quarters. 18.7 per
1000 of the estimated population is the death rate, and 26.5
is the birth rate during the quarter. The deaths from zymotic
diseases (almost the same as last winter quarter) are very low.
It is not uncommon for 20 per cent. of the deaths to be from
zymotic diseases, here they are only about 11 per cent. of the
total deaths. More than half are from whooping-cough in
young children. It was fatal to 30 children, whilst last quarter
it was fatal in 28 cases. This disease has now in 15 months,
destroyed 94 children, and it is difficult to say the amount that
