Systematic Sanitary Inspection.
During the last year this most useful department of
sanitary organization has been conducted by C. J. Biorn,
and embraced all the streets, houses, and courts of the
parish, inhabited chiefly by working people, comprising
a population of about 29,351 persons in 2,515 houses,
17,008 rooms, 2,802 families in single rooms.
The sanitary defects are recorded in forms kept for the
purpose. In order to get more accurate data concerning
the state of the persons living in a certain class of street,
I have grouped them into districts,* having a similarity
of composition, and the records kept are under the following
heads:— name of street, no. of house, no. of rooms,
no. of adults, of children, cubic space in basement,
ground floor, front and back kitchens, 1st floor, 2nd
floor, attics, &c., and no. of persons in one room, when
occupied by a single family. The Inspector notices all
defects of cleanliness, dust receptacle, water supply,
do. of water closets, drains and traps, paving of yards
and wash-houses. The sanitary orders issued upon
owners or occupiers, are reported to the Sanitary
Committee at their fortnightly meetings. The effect
