pumps used by people in different parts. Soon after
my appointment as Public Analyst, samples of these
waters were collected for analysis, and I found most of
them unfit for human consumption—containing, as
shallow wells generally do, a larger proportion of
organic elements than would be safe to allow in
drinking water At my suggestion, some wells are
disused, and those in use are for horses, and for washing
vehicles at large stables. The Inspectors have instructions
to collect water, and submit it to me for analysis,
from cisterns exposed to foul and offensive emanations
from water closets, dust holes, and cisterns without
covers. In three instances of this kind the water was
not found, upon analysis, to be contaminated, by
ammonaical products, which may be presumed, rapidly
dissolve from air in contact with the upper surface
of water.
