Pop. 98,884. St. Mary's, 60,670 ; St. John's, 38,214.
A birth rate of 29 per 1000, and a death rate of
18.6 indicate a most favourable state of public
health in Paddington, but if studied in detail, it
calls for some remarks. In St. Mary's District,
taken separately, the deaths would be 22 per 1000,
while St. John's would be only 16. Some streets
have a very high death rate, as high even as
40, while other streets are as low as 7.5. See
Appendix, of Statistical returns for certain Streets.
One cause of a low Death Rate.
It has been observed in the Report of the

milliners coming from the country, and returning
to their native air when health fails them ; it is not
therefore surprising that the large number of this
class of persons in Paddington should materially
