During this quarter, ending September 25, the deaths in this
Parish were 436; 37 in St. Mary's Hospital and 20 in the
Workhouse. The number is 13 less than the corresponding
quarter of last year. The births in the same period were 635,
being 200 in excess of deaths. The rate of mortality is only
16.8 per 1000, assuming that the same rate of increase in population
has been going on. Some allowance, however, must be
made for the demolition of houses for the Metropolitan Railway
Works. The deaths from Zymotic diseases were 97 or 22.2
per cent of the total deaths. In young children under 5 years
of age 195 deaths are recorded, or 44.7 per cent of the total
mortality. 43 deaths from Diarrhoea were recorded, chiefly in
very young children; almost half the amount of the corresponding
quarter in 1868. Scarlatina was fatal this quarter to 36 children,
varying in age from 1 to 8 years. The average annual mortality
