These Streets are mostly of modern construction, and built originally as if intended to be
occupied by one family; but, as will be seen, 441 houses contain 1768 families or holdings. They cannot
be considered as overcrowded, taking into consideration that the average cubic space for each
inhabitant is 702.3. In some houses are single rooms with breathing space less than
the general average. Except where the house and people are dirty, I have not thought it desirable
to report them as examples of overcrowding; yet orders have been given in several instances, and
the houses are kept under observation. The state of the road, and the pondage of water in Clarendon
Street have been sources of complaint, but will be remedied as soon as the Highway Board take the
matter in hand, which is expected forthwith.
