intentions of the Legislature, as expressed in the
Sanitary Act of 1866, will sooner or later be
carried out.
It is most important that greater attention to
decency and decorum should be given than what
is found in the ordinary Parish Dead houses;
some architectural and ecclesiastical ornament
should be observed in the building itself; and
nothing repulsive to the feelings should be
permitted in any of its arrangements that might
deter persons living in crowded houses from
removing the body of a deceased relative to a
Mortuary a few days previous to interment.
Summary of Sanitary Works.
The sanitary works done in the past year are to
be found in a tabulated form herewith appended,
showing the locality and nature of the works
ordered and completed in various parts of the
parish. This unusually large amount of work has
been accomplished with very few exceptions without
resorting to legal proceedings. The threat of
prosecutions for penalties incurred by neglect has
in nearly every instance sufficed to get works completed
to the satisfaction of the Inspectors, and
where obstacles and difficulties have arisen, landlords
have encountered them in a fair spirit and
done all that could be reasonably expected.
