Anonymous communications have recently
reached me, and I deem it right to attend to
them as far as possible; but it is difficult to carry
out without a special machinery every request
made in these communications. One letter says
"please to call at all the milliners and dress
makers in Westbourne Grove, where certain
houses are working over-time contrary to Act of
Parliament;" 17 shops were visited on the day
following, but without obtaining any satisfactory
result. "Humanitas" calls attention also to the
lateness of the working hours in shops of Westbourne
Grove. Four letters plainly refer to other
establishments, where either the Saturday halfholiday
has been wilfully neglected, "because they
dispute the law," or where night work is continued
until 10, and very often till half-past 11 and a
quarter to 12. These hints have not been lost
sight of, and a definite action will sooner or later
be taken with regard to them. Since a part of
this paragraph was written, a large number of
work-shops have at request closed work at 2 o'clock
on the Saturday Afternoon.
