IMPROVEMENTS.
The thoroughfare through Fox's Lane and Peel Alley to Lower
Shadwell has been closed, in accordance with the arrangement made
with the London Dock Company to that effect; they having provided
new roads in lieu thereof.
The purchase of the lessee's interest in No. 115, Wapping Street,
has been completed. The arrangement made with the owner and lessee
of No. 21½ Red Lion Street, Wapping, has been completed, and the
premises set back to the new line of frontage. The materials of the
premises Nos. 115, 116, 117, 118, and 119, Wapping Street, and Nos.
22, 23, 24, and 25, Red Lion Street, have been sold bv auction, and
the houses pulled down, for the improvement and widening of that part
of Wapping Street. One third of the expense of this improvement will
be paid by the Metropolitan Hoard of Works.
The new road from the East India Dock Road, Liinehouse, to
Victoria Park, has been formed as far as the bridge over the Lea Cut,
and a retaining wall has been built on the west side, at the joint
expense of the Hoard and the owner of the property adjoining; the
remainder of the road situate within this district and which is on the
Cotton Estate, will be formed by Mr. Cotton.
The freehold houses, Nos. 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, and 32, on the west
side of White Horse Street, Ratcliffe, have been purchased by the Board
as a site for the proposed new offices.
A fire having destroyed Messrs. Goodhart and Co.'s premises in the
Horseferry Road, an opportunity offered to form a new road from
Queen Street into Risbies' Rope Walk, and a negotiation has been
opened with the owners for the purchase of the portion of the premises
required.
Plans for the establishment of a steam ferry between Shadwell and
Rotherithe were deposited at this office, with a notice of the intention
of the promoters to apply for a bill in the present session of Parliament;
the proposed works interfering injuriously with the thoroughfares of the
parish of Shadwell, a petition has been prepared and presented against
the undertaking.
