Several new Carriageway crossings have been constructed in the
footway pavings in various parts of the district.
A farther portion of the sura of £14,000, which the Board has
been authorized to borrow by the Metropolitan Board of Works for the
purpose of paving the unpaved portions of 1the parish of Limehouse,
has been borrowed, and the paving Works have been completed in the
streets above mentioned; the paving of the remainder of the streets is
rapidly proceeding.
UNPAVED ROADS.
These roads have been repaired with gravel and broken stone.
A large quantity of old pebbles, taken up from the streets in Limehouse
Fields, has been broken up and used on the roads in Limehouse in place
of new material.
Considerable alterations have been made in the levels of the streets
throughout Limehouse Fields, in laying the new footpath; additional
labour has been required in consequence, and a large quantity of surplus
ground has been removed.
CLEANSING.
The principal streets throughout the district are swept daily,
and the other streets, at least twice a week bv men employed by the
Board.
A contract has been entered into for the removal of slop, dust, &c.,
for the ensuing year.
Many complaints have been made respecting the non-removal of
dust by the contractor; in some cases accumulations of dust are
caused by the unwillingness of the occupiers of the houses to have it
removed more frequently.
WATERING.
The sheets and public places in the district have been watered
during the season. A contract has been entered into for the ensuing
season tor the same purpose.
LIGHTING.
The number of public lamps in the district is 634.
