during the hot months, as was the case all over London;
176 deaths occurring in this District. The number of deaths
from scarlet fever was only 6, as compared with 9 in the
previous year, although the number of cases of this disease
was much greater. One death was registered from
pox, this only being the second death from this disease in
the District since 1893.
Population.

The population of the Lewisham District, at the Census of 1891, was found to be 92,647, occupying 15,643 houses. At Midsummer, 1899, there were 22,007 inhabited houses, and the population was estimated at 130,622, an increase of 11,382 in the year.

Births.

The registered births in the District in the year 1899
amounted to 3,061, an increase of 288 on the previous year;
of these 63, or 2 per cent., were illegitimate.
Males . 1,516. Females . 1,545
Birth rate to population = 23.4 per 1000.
The birth rate in England and Wales in 1899 was 29.3
per 1,000, which is lower than any other year on record.
Deaths.
The total number of deaths in 1899 was 1,818, as
compared with 1,670 in 1898.
