ENLARGEMENT OF THE TOWN HALL.
Progress has been made in this matter during the year.
In November the Board received a further report from their
Special Committee, of which the following is a copy:—
"The Committee, in their report to the Board on the 10th
February, 1897, stated that they had had before them for
some time the absolute necessity for the extension of the
Board's Offices to meet the present and future requirements
of the District, and they then recommended that the Board
should acquire the plot of freehold land at the rear of the
present Offices for the purpose of such extension.
"The recommendation was adopted by the Board, and the
ground was duly acquired. Proceedings were at the same
time taken for stopping up the old footpath intervening
between the piece of ground and the present buildings, and
this was carried into effect as reported by the Committee
to the Board on the 10th Nov., 1897 (Min., par. 17). In
that report the Committee expressed a hope that they would
be able at an early date to submit to the Board recommendations
with reference to the enlargement of the Town
Hall, which subject was engaging their earnest attention.
"The Committee accordingly proceeded with the consideration
of the matter, and they have held numerous meetings, and
very carefully considered all the circumstances of the case.
