authority has taken over the powers and duties of the
Metropolitan Board of Works, and it has further and extended
powers conferred upon it by the Act referred to. To
the present time no alteration has been made in the constitution
of the Vestries and District Boards.
THE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE DISTRICT
AT THE METROPOLITAN BOARD.
From the establishment of the Metropolitan Board of
Works until the year 1885, this Board was not separately
represented on that Board, as they jointly with the Plumstead
District elected one representative. In the year
mentioned a short Act, intituled "The Metropolis Management
Amendment Act, 1885," was obtained, empowering
this Board to elect a separate Representative at the Metropolitan
Board, and on the 23rd September following,
Mr. T. W. Williams was elected the first representative of
the Board thereunder. In June 1888, Mr. Williams' first
term of office expired, and he was unanimously re-elected by
the Board.
On the 20th March, 1889, in reply to a question as to
the Lewisham Recreation Grounds, the Chairman referred to
the Order of the Local Government Board issued that day,
directing that the "appointed day" for the transfer to the
London County Council of the powers and duties of the
Metropolitan Board of Works should be Thursday, the 21st
March, and that consequently the Board would that day
cease to exist according to the terms of the Local Government
Act, 1888, when Mr. Brabrook stated that the Board
would not wish the occasion to pass without placing upon
record their sincere thanks to Mr. Williams for the service he
had rendered the District since his appointment as the representative
of this Board at the Metropolitan Board of Works;
and he moved—"That the best thanks of this Board be given
to Mr. Williams for his eminent and valuable services to the
District during the time he has been a Member of the Metropolitan
Board of Works."
