Several summonses were taken out for non-compliance with
the Hoard's regulations for the ventilation of the drains of new
houses, but I do not think I need mention the names of the
Buildeis in this report. 1 he larger Sewers havy been regularly
cleansed and flushed, and stoppages removed in the smaller pipe
Sewers.

Wherever practicable, surface water drains are laid in new
streets, so that if the time ever arrive for a separation of surfacewater
from sewage it can the more readily be effected. A flooc
took place early on the morning of the loth of October. Tlu
houses in Molesworth and Rennell Streets, and Shepherd's Place,
Lewisham, and Railway Terrace, Ladywell, &c., were flooded, but
the height of the water was nearly three feet lower than the great
Hood of 1878. The Mill gates, &c., were all open in good time,
This bears out what 1 said in my report, Min., 1877, page 32—viz.
That the sluices, &c., at the Mills, cannot take the water in
a flood. The rainfall, as registered during the storm, was as
follows :—
