the Quaggy, which will give the houses in Nightingale Grove,
Maythorne, and Maybank Cottages an outfall. The plans and
sections are all prepared, and I sincerely hope to be at work, constructing
the brick sewer in the valley of the Quaggy, before
many weeks elapse. I am particularly anxious to carry out this
work, as I consider it indispensible that better drainage should be
given to the houses in Nightingale Grove, Maythorne, and Maybank
Cottages, also the lower portion of Ennersdale Road, Park
Road, Knowle Hill Crescent, and the new roads lately sanctioned
out of Park Road; in fact, quite a small town is growing up, and
with no other means of drainage than cesspools. I expect very
soon to have orders to commence putting in the sewers on Major
Foster's Estate, near West Hill. These sewers will give the means
of drainage to the houses draining into cesspools on Sydenham
Hill. I think it is a matter for congratulation that in all
probability these localities which have been so long in want of
proper sewers will shortly have efficient outfalls.
The corrections of the 25in. Ordnance map of Penge was completed,
and the map of the whole district has been in the hands of
the lithographers for some time.
In conclusion, I wish to say the work in my department has
increased very much during the year. For instance, the number
of plans and detail drawings required has been greatly in excess of
former years. In a report like this I cannot enumerate all the
works carried out in the twelve months, as it would make my
Report so very long if I went so much into detail, consequently I
have drawn the attention of your Board to the most important
matters.
I have the honour to be,
Gentlemen,
Your obedient humble servant,
JOHN CARLINE,
Civil Engineer,
Surveyor to the Board.
The Board of Works for the
Lewisham District.
