The Ivy Lane Sewer, in an engineering point of view, is probably
the most difficult sewer the Board have ever had to construct.
In the deepest place the sewer is 38 feet from the surface of the
road to the invert. There are seven man-holes and ventilators
combined in the length of the sewer, and seven resting chambers.
The work has just commenced, and is let to Messrs. Cook and Co.,
of Westminster Chambers, Victoria Street, at a contract sum of
£3900. I expect, on account of the wet nature of the ground, it
will be requisite to encase the lower portion of the sewer in
concrete, which will be an extra upon the contract.
The Sewers on the British Land Company's Estate, Penge,
were put in by the Board, which I consider a most satisfactory
arrangement. The whole of the work was done by Mr. William
Carter, of Penge, for the sum of £790, which sum includes
the surface water drains, with gullies and connections to the same,
as well as sewers.
