that it is a manufactured and not a natural Asphalte it has more
than met my expectations. The Limmer Rock Asphalte laid in
Wells Road, during 1873, where the footway is very narrow has
worn completely through to the concrete. I have no doubt in my
mind that where there is much heavy traffic Rock Asphalte will
not last the length of time that many suppose. No doubt where
the paths are wide, and the traffic distributed over the surface of
them, it will last a long time. Were it not for the swelling, or
expansion, that has occurred to some of the panels of the Concrete
Paving, I should be inclined to recommend it as being the most
lasting material. In the Asphalte Pavement you are not altogether
free from this danger, for, in several places in the District, the
Asphalte has risen through the excision of the cement. None
but cement from the best makers was used. By the foregoing
remarks it must not be supposed I have a bad opinion of the
Limmer Asphalte. This is not the case. The best Asphalte
paths in the District have been laid by the Limmer Company;
and I believe the Limmer Company's Asphalte laid mastic, for
footpaths, Hill Wear as well, if not better, than any known Asphalte.
