as large again as the carts hitherto used, but not any larger than
the carts employed in Greenwich, Chelsea, and other parts of
London. The contractors who supplied horses, carts, and harness
for the collection of dust during the year were as follows:—In
Lewisham and Blackheath, Mrs. Grant at 6s. a day per horse,
harness, and cart; Sydenham and Forest Hill, Mr. Stimpson, at
6s. a day per horse, harness, and cart; and in Penge, Mr. Craker,
at 7s. a day per horse, harness, and cart. There were 7,428
loads of dust, &c., collected during the year in Lewisham Parish,
and 1,828 loads in the Hlamlet of Penge. As we had not properly
started during the year to collect the dust with our own horses and
carts, I am not in a position to report upon the matter.
